What’s on in inner-city Brisbane

599 things on · 159 free

The inner city is where most of Brisbane’s calendar happens, and where the big ticketed rooms are. It helps to think in precincts. South Bank, in South Brisbane, is the cultural core: the Gallery of Modern Art alone carries a huge share, much of it film, with the State Library, QPAC and the Queensland Museum alongside for art, workshops and things made for kids. Fortitude Valley is the music and late-night end, built around the Tivoli and the Fortitude Music Hall. The CBD adds the Museum of Brisbane and the city libraries; New Farm’s Brisbane Powerhouse runs theatre, comedy and classes; and the Princess Theatre, over in Woolloongabba, leans to live music.

Put together, the mix is close to everything — music first, then film and workshops, with art, kids’ events, community, theatre and comedy not far behind. It runs busy every day, peaking midweek from Wednesday to Friday, the opposite of the daytime suburb libraries. Only about a third is free; this is the ticketed end of town, so check the price on each listing.
