Things to do with kids in Brisbane

202 things on · 168 free

Two kinds of day out sit side by side on the kids’ calendar. One is the free local session: story time, craft and holiday mornings at the suburban libraries, among them Garden City at Upper Mount Gravatt, Wynnum and Toowong. The other is the ticketed show or gallery program in town, at the State Library of Queensland, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Brisbane Powerhouse. Most of it is the first kind, since about five in six listings are free. South Brisbane carries the biggest share through the South Bank venues, then New Farm, Wynnum and the CBD, so there’s plenty close to the city and plenty in the suburbs. Sessions run right across the week with a weekday lean, busiest on Wednesday and Thursday, and this is the home for school-holiday programs when they land. For South Bank, the Cultural Centre busway and South Bank station drop you at the door; the Powerhouse is a CityCat ride to the New Farm Park or Sydney Street terminal, and the libraries sit on local bus routes.
