What’s on in South Brisbane

South Brisbane is the busiest suburb on our calendar, and it’s the one with the most for families. Almost everything runs out of the South Bank cultural precinct. The Gallery of Modern Art, on Stanley Place, carries the biggest share, much of it screenings in its own cinema; the State Library of Queensland, next door on Stanley Place, comes next. QPAC and the Queensland Museum, both at the Grey Street end, round it out. The mix leans to film, hands-on workshops, art and things made for kids, and about a quarter of it is free. There’s something on almost every day of the week — midweek as much as the weekend — so a weekday visit works just as well.

Getting there is easy without the car. South Bank and South Brisbane stations both sit a short walk from the galleries, the South Bank CityCat terminal lands you on the river, and buses stop at the Cultural Centre busway. South Bank Parklands runs alongside the venues — lawns, playgrounds and riverside paths — good for before or after.
