West End Library
West End spreads its listings around, which is the point of the place. The library on Boundary Street carries the biggest single share, but most of what’s on sits in one-off nights across the suburb’s bars, small rooms and arts spaces — Archive Beer Boutique and the Covent Garden gin bar on Boundary Street, Flying Colours on Vulture Street, Mirrorball Ministries, and the Thomas Dixon Centre on Montague Road, Queensland Ballet’s heritage home. The mix runs to hands-on workshops, community events, live music and films, with the odd late session and a couple of things for kids. Around three-quarters of it is free, which is a lot for a suburb built on going out.
There’s no train station; the nearest are South Brisbane and South Bank, across the river. The CityCat lands at the West End terminal by Orleigh Park, the Blue CityGlider bus runs in from the city, and ordinary routes work Boundary Street, Montague Road and Hardgrave Road. It’s a walkable suburb once you’re in it.
