Musing on music
Ashgrove Library
Thursday is the day to watch in Ashgrove. More of the suburb’s listings land then than on any other day — a weekly rhythm worth planning around. Most of it comes out of Ashgrove Library on Amarina Avenue, and the slant is more grown-up than most suburb programs: community talks and get-togethers lead the bill, pitched largely at adults and seniors, with a smaller run for kids and the odd music, film or festival date. The green edge is Dorrington Park on Mirrabooka Road, where a couple of outdoor listings join the playground, skate park and off-leash dog area. Most of it is free.
This leafy inner-west pocket has no train station of its own. Buses run along Waterworks Road and Ashgrove Avenue, and the nearest stations are a short bus ride away at Alderley. Dorrington Park has a car park off Frasers Road if you’d rather drive. A Thursday at the library and then the park makes an easy half-day.
